Here are five small changes you can make to feel and function better in 2026.
Take a close look at what you drink each day
When it comes to staying properly hydrated, virtually all of us fall short. Begin this year with a commitment to drinking more water, even if it’s only adding a cup of tea to your routine.
You should also examine your beverage choices to look for added sugars. Replacing sugary sodas, coffee drinks, or juice with unsweetened (or less sweet) versions or plain water can dramatically reduce your daily sugar intake.
As for alcohol, recent research suggests that no level of alcohol consumption is good for human health. If you don’t have issues with alcohol abuse, you don’t have to give up an occasional beer, cocktail, or glass of wine. But consider gradually reducing your overall alcohol intake to boost your health in 2026.
Improve your cooking skills
Let’s be real: planning, preparing, and cleaning up after healthy meals is not always easy. But food you cook at home tends to be much more nutritious than the options you choose at restaurants, fast food places, or takeout.
You don’t have to become a chef to enjoy the benefits of new cooking skills. And you don’t have to attend culinary school to learn new tricks of the trade. Many videos and books can show you how to up your kitchen game.
Sheet-pan suppers, tools like electric pressure cookers or slow cookers, and learning how to make delicious soup from homemade stock are great places to begin. You might even develop a new hobby as you improve your health, not to mention the money you can save.
Dedicate yourself to a daily walk
You already know that staying active is a great way to improve your health and wellness. But it can feel overwhelming to fit exercise into an already overburdened schedule.
One of the best ways to boost your daily activity level is by adding a simple walk to your day. If you can walk before lunch, you’ll check one thing off your to-do list early. But you can also get those steps in by parking farther from your destination, walking during your lunch break, or buying a walking pad you can use while watching TV.
Some people find it helpful to use a fitness tracker or app to measure progress. You can find affordable new or used options online. But tracking your steps is not necessary; you can also track your progress by how you feel and how easily you’re able to increase your distance or intensity over time.
Start or build upon social connections
Mental health is a component of overall health, and the connections you make with others can have a deep and lasting impact on your quality of life. If you’ve slipped away from connections over the years, look for ways to reconnect with old friends or build new bonds.
If your schedule allows, volunteering is a great way not only to spend time connecting with others but also to give back to your community, with its own benefits. You could also join a club or organization, or look for social events online.
Improve the quality of your sleep
Restful sleep is another area where most people can make improvements. If you find yourself feeling sluggish during the day or having a hard time staying asleep at night, look for ways to improve your sleep environment.
Finding the right pillow, reducing the temperature in your bedroom, and sticking to a strict bedtime/wake schedule are all great places to begin. You can also reduce your daily caffeine consumption and avoid screen time close to bedtime.
